art of dreams
Surrealism originated in the late 1910s and early '20s as a literary movement that experimented with a new mode of expression called automatic writing, or automatism, which sought to release the unbridled imagination of the subconscious. André Bretón in The First Surrealist Manifesto of 1924:
"Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express -- verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner -- the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by the thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern."
He advocated art and literature based on Freud’s psychoanalytic technique of free association as a means of exploring the imagination and entering the world of myth, fear, fantasy and dream.
