Fauvism was the first of the avant gardes that flourished in Europe in the beginning of the XX Century. This group of artist were the first to break with the rules of the Impressionism as well with the olders and traditional methods to perceive reality. The term Fauvism was the way used to refer to these people that were called les Fauves (French for "the wild beasts"). The movement lasted just for a few years. Their main influences came from the colorist way of expression of Gauguin and the brushstrokes used by Van Gogh.
