Expressionism was a movement that was located mainly in Germany and Austria. Although there was not a group of artists that called themselves as expressionists, as it occurred with other groups, these artists shared the same passion to communicate their deepest feelings and the way they struggled with those emotions and feelings, shown in their color palette, mainly: strong, violent, dramatic. Pigments are intensified to symbolize drama.
Three were the groups in which the main artists were divided:

Founded in 1905. Its name reflects a hope that their work would be, like bridge to the art of the future. Produced figure paintings and portraits depicting human suffering and anxiety, still-lives and landscapes characterized by distorted shapes and violent colors.Artists that belonged here were:

Art ranged from sometime pure abstractions of Kandinsky to the romantic imagery of Marc. Common to the artists in the group was a philosophical spirit, an intellectual approach to technique, and great lyrical spontaneity. Artists here:

die storm - the storm.The artists that gathered in this group were the most liberal and opened minded of all. The images were extremely erotic and exacerbated emotions. They were focused in a figurative stylewith a wide rage of techniques. It can be said that the purpose was the same: represent eroticism and exacerbated emotions in a particular point of view. Artists of this group were:

abstract expressionism
It got its best representation through the pieces of Jackson Pollock, with its technique he called: Action painting, he connected body and soul with a unreasonable way of expression.
As you can see, Expressionism had an impact in many ways of expression: music, painting, photography, poetry, and films. The German expressionist tendency in movies had its main example with fritz Lang and Metropolis and Robert Wiene and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligary". Look at the following video about it.
