barrueco - "large and irregular pearl"
This is the movement that rised in Europe in the beginning of the XVII Century, although its replication in America started on the XVIII Century. The term is said to come from the art critics of the XIX Century that named it due to the Portuguese phrase "pérola barroca", which means "irregular pearl", a natural pearls that deviate from the usual.
The style was an innitiative encourage by the Roman Catholic Church as part of the Counter Reformation ro recovered the control lost by the Reformation. If we could compare this with amodern strategy, it could be like a promotional campaign.

The name came from the architect Jose Benito Churriguera leader of this movement. A great example can be seen in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. |
