A colorful, brilliant way to express religion
Gothic art evolved from Romanesque art and lasted from the mid-12th century to as late as the end of the 16th century in some areas.
In different countries, people were eager to have their own cathedral in order to be closer to God and feel secure and protected. The problem was how to solve the problem of supporting those big buildings with those huge vaults. All these elements had the purpose of showing the majesty and power of God and to receive their golden and colorful power. The problem lied on, How to solve the dilemma of building those enormous cathedrals, with a huge vault, tall towers without running the risk of collapse? Look at the serial "The Pillars of the earth",(2010) specially chapter 8 in which the solution to this problem is solved. Gothic painting: two schools in duocento-trecento
The painting of the Gothic period was the result of discoveries and the interest of a group of artists to gain their freedom from architecture. Usually, paintings were only used to decorate churches and other religious buldings. Since this period, some of the artists continued working for the builders but some others created their art pieces separately from this discipline. Two schools were important at this time:
Florentine School (set in Florence, Italy). Included painters as: Duccio, Cimabue and Giotto
Flemish School (set in Neatherlands) Included painters as: Van der Weyden and Van Eyck.
